I wrote this song about playing in bars, and the characters I get to do that with. It was recorded in front of an open window on a Zoom handy recorder.

There’s smoke coming off the stove top range as another deal goes down
I offer my acquaintance something to eat, but she says she’s not sticking around
It’s getting harder to miss your old sweet kiss this far down in the ground
For every dollar in my liver, you’d think by now I woulda bought this whole damn town
Daddy’s picture sits on a window sill, crowded by words unspoke
He grew up on the river, kept his wits sharp, and knew how to rosin a bow
Well if dear old dad could hear me now I know it’d hurt him so
Just a sad young man with a broken heart in his hands and no boat on no river to row
But every night I’m out, working on songs, hangin’ em on the wall by a nail
And even if the eyelashes at the bar are fake, the tears falling are real
Yeah I’m in a band, and it’s when I can stand up burning and strong
We try our best, bullshit the rest, and love it when you sing along
This crooked stage is our place, it knows our names, the lights cast a vibe to ride on
Out of every corner of that old bar crawls a handshake, a story, and a song
And every night we’re out, working on songs, hangin’ em on the wall by a nail
And even if the eyelashes at the bar are fake, the tears falling are real
Then it’s back to whatever you call this, smoking out the window, watching it hail
Made enough last night to try my luck, put together some kind of meal
I just wanna pay my bills, keep it real, and stay out of jail
As long as the band sticks around I’ll be too busy to make it, but working too steady to fail
